In a three way conversation podcast of Tim Holt, Miguel Guhlin, and teacher Janice Schlottmann they discuss a situation that teacher Janice Schlottmann has found herself in.  Below is part of the original post by Tim about her situation.

What happens when a teacher comes up against a textbook company and it’s intellectual property protection clause?

In this case, the teacher is left with little help from their education “partner” and is left to fend for herself.

A three-way conversation between first grade teacher Janice Schlottmann, Miguel Guhlin, and Tim Holt on an interesting dilemma. Student needs vs. copyright policy.

Listen and think about what would you do?

To hear the podcast about her situation visit Tim Holt’s blog.  I think both Tim and Miguel make some great points in the podcast about having the students create their own stories or having older secondary students create books for elementary students to read and podcast.

However, should these companies who come to our schools and district asking to be our “partner” in meeting the student needs, put such a crunch on something as innovative as what Ms. Schlottmann wanted to do for her students, and their needs?

    Paul,
Thanks for keeping the conversation going. I am hoping that as many people as possible in the edublogosphere pick up Janice’s story. THe response from HM was unfounded, ill-advised and sets a pretty bad precedent.

I have linked your site off of the original post!
